Holiday in Holland '08
When: 05 until 22-09-2008
Where: Monnickendam, Texel, Groningen & Zwolle
The first two days of our holiday we stayed in Monnickendam, a small town which lies on the coast of the IJsselmeer, just north of Amsterdam. Although it is a small fishing village today, it was a important port in earlier centuries (it received city rights in 1355).
On our tour through the province of Noord-Holland we visited Edam, De Zaanse Schans and Marken. Unfortunately we had typical dutch weather: rain, rain and more rain, but we managed a few photos anyway.
Our next stay was on the island Texel, where we visited Ecomare (the center for wadden and North Sea, and a seal sanctuary) and Eureka (orchid and bird garden) and went for a long walk in 'De Slufter', a beautiful nature reserve.
Next stop: Paterswolde, near Groningen, capital city of the province of Groningen. To get there, we had to cross the 'Afsluitdijk', the 32 km long dam between the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland. Apart from a visit to Groningen (the city...), we also went to the Borger Hunebed Centre and the Northern Zoo in Emmen.
On our way to the south we stayed in Zwolle, capital city of the province of Overijssel. Here we also didn't have much luck with the weather.
Final destination was Etten-Leur, home of Martin's mother, where we went for a walk in the nearby woods of 'De Pannenhoef'.
